Voice services are currently receiving significant attention worldwide. By 2022, about 55% of all US households will have voice assistant devices, whether on speakers, digital receivers, connected TVs, cars, or wearables. At that time, the total number of installed devices will exceed 175 million. While today most devices with voice assistants are speakers, there is a clear trend: This technology is increasingly being integrated into other devices (Juniper Research, 2018).

DiscVision is taking a leading role in this trend by integrating the Alexa Voice Service (AVS) into various devices. The integration of the Amazon AVS service combined with a push-to-talk or hands-free voice control allows personalized devices to be operated by voice while utilizing all Amazon Alexa services like Amazon Music, Kindle eBooks, TuneIn Music, and over 50,000 Alexa skills.

Presentation of UDEE at IBC 2019

The French company 4mod and DiscVision will present the results of their collaboration at the International Broadcast Conference (IBC) in Amsterdam starting from September 13, 2019. The solution presented is a far-field voice control device called UDEE, which connects via Bluetooth to a STB that supports both the wake word engine and the Alexa Voice Service (AVS). DiscVision, as an officially appointed Alexa Voice Service (AVS) Solution Provider, has integrated this solution into its STB system, while 4mod designed the UDEE device.

The UDEE device recognizes the Alexa wake word and accepts voice commands. If the device is flipped over, it deactivates and no longer listens. The familiar Alexa user experience is now also available on set-top boxes and televisions without requiring changes to these devices – a simple software update is sufficient.
